International Scientific Exchange

The Faculty of Fisheries has a long history and achievements of international exchange. A total of 10 foreign students have graduated to date. In the graduate school, master's degree has been obtained by 69 persons and doctoral degree by 14. They are mostly from Asia such as China and Indonesia, but also from all over the world including U.S.A., France, Brazil and African countries. After returning home, they are playing an active role with a high level position in education and research in their respective of an international research institute, a responsible staff member of a famous laboratory in France, and the president of a university in Indonesia.

The Graduate School of Fisheries has an agreement with the University of South Carolina for the exchange of graduate students. This agreement provides that one or two students per year are to be mutually accepted free of tuition and to be trained with the full responsibility of the accepting party. In 1994, a student of our graduate school studied the behavior of marine animals in the University of South Carolina at Department of Biology, and this experience has been helpful in his subsequent research activities.

Joint studies with overseas research institutes are also prosperous. Conducted during these several years were a study on Korean fisheries, a biological study on Korean pufferfihes, and a study on marine organisms in the East China Sea, with Pukyong National University (formerly National Fisheries University of Pusan) of Korea, a study on tropical mudskippers with Universiti Sains Malaysia, and a study on marine organisms in the estuary area with the University of South Carolina. Joint seminars with the university of Korea are held periodically. Intensive research exchanges take place especially with universities in Korea, Malaysia and U.S.A. The annual cruising exercises participated by all the undergraduate students provide opportunities for international exchange upon visiting overseas universities.

In addition to these, research exchange at individual level has been numerous. International exchange will be more prosperous and opportunities for students to participate in international exchange are expected to increase hereafter.

Open Class

The open class of the Faculty of Fisheries has a long history. It started in 1969 in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty of Fisheries. The open class has been continued for 25 years without any interruption under the fundamental policy of contribution to the life-time education of those concerned with fisheries. This policy is based on the idea that utilization of the knowledge of university staff for local industries upon opening the door of the Faculty of Fisheries to the public would greatly help the advancement of fishery business of Nagasaki Prefecture which is noted for fisheries.

Open class of university is usually held in the campus. However, the open class of the Faculty of Fisheries is held upon visiting the residential areas of those concerned with fisheries because of the peculiar geographical background of Nagasaki Prefecture with many distant islands. It is much appreciated by the participants. The lectures are designed to meet the needs of the times on the issues of coastal fisheries and aquaculture, such as marine pollution, fisheries resources, fish diseases, food processing, distribution, management and other fields. The lectures are given by selected members of the faculty taking into consideration the local peculiarity of the place. The participants are often invited to the tour of research and training ship and are also given on-the-spot exercise by instructors.
